Many people struggling to lose weight have turned to rooibos tea (AKA “red tea”). Overall, red tea helps one to acheive a healthier, more manageable weight without the negative side effects associated with other weight loss beverages and teas.
Enjoyed throughout southern Africa for a considerable length of time, rooibos tea has turned into a highly-acclaimed drink far and wide. It primarily serves as a tasty, caffeine-free alternative to dark and green tea.
The ingredients found in red tea can can positively impact one’s overall state of health by: increasing levels of antioxidants within frequent users, lowering LDL (“bad cholesterol”) within the blood, and aiding in the overall process of losing weight.
Many wonder whether these advantages are upheld by scientific data or if they are just myths.
This article investigates the facts behind red tea’s weight loss advantages and whether there any potential side effects to consider before consuming.
Benefits of Red Tea Detox:
1. High levels of health-promoting antioxidants
Antioxidants are substances that can neutralize free radicals and protect the body from toxins, pathogens, and other forms of cellular damage.
Glutathione, the most powerful antioxidant in our bodies and also the main component of red tea, has an direct effect on weight loss by reducing the number of free radicals within our body.
Free radicals are chemicals that are naturally formed in the body as a byproduct of calories being converted to energy.
2. Boosts good HDL cholesterol and lowers LDL (“bad cholesterol”)
Another study conducted by the FDA over a six-week period showed that drinking six cups of rooibos tea daily significantly increased total polyphenol levels, which improved HDL “good” cholesterol. It also lowered “bad” LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, another lipid found in your blood
3. Aids in the overall process of weight loss
Low calorie and naturally sweet, with the help of the antioxidants and balancing blood sugar, red tea can be a great addition to your beverage choices while trying to lose weight.
Research suggests that aspalathin, an active ingredient in rooibos tea, helps reduce stress hormones that trigger hunger and fat storage, which is also linked to heart disease, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Data from this study showed that rooibos tea has the potential for preventing obesity by affecting the balance of energy and how it’s used as energy or stored as fat.
To get the most out of aspalathin, choose green tea over red tea
4. Possibly Prevent & Treat Diabetes
Lastly, although still under investigation, cleansing the body by drinking red tea can help prevent and known even in some cases to treat diabetes
Rooibos tea is the only known natural source of the antioxidant aspalathin, which animal studies suggest may have anti-diabetic effects.
One study in mice with type 2 diabetes found that aspalathin balanced blood sugar levels and reduced insulin resistance, which could prove promising for people who have or are at risk of type 2 diabetes.
However, human studies are needed.
Reccommended Red Teas for Detoxing Purposes:
After a very scrutenizing internet search, and even going as far as drinikng a few of the red tea detox brands offered online and in the health-store, I was able to comprise a list of the most effective ones for weight loss:
1. The Red Tea Detox
The Red Tea Detox is the latest cleansing and weight loss brew to hit the market. It is described as a secret African drink that is widely acclaimed for its ability to burn a pound of fat every 72 hours.
This brand was my absolute favorite amongst them all! This is not only a detox tea, but rather a daily routine that one should plan on adapting to upon purchasing this product.
The detox program is divided into three parts. These include: diet, exercise, and willpower.
Besides the actual program, a lot of bonuses that come in the form of video tutorials and audio books. These include:
- The Red Smoothie Recipe
- The Ultimate Super Food Guide
- 5 Detox Methods of Fabulous Celebrities
- Effortless Weight Loss Hypnosis (Audio Book)
What I liked about this detox tea is that it is flexible. You are not restricted from eating certain foods as compared to other programs for weight loss. In fact, you can incorporate this drink with other diets such as smoothies and lattes.
• Almost zero side effects
I’ve found the Red Detox program to have almost zero side effects. You may experience a slight headache or nausea during the first few days but this will subside in no time.
• Scientifically proven benefits
This detox program works beyond expectations. It has undergone years of research and over 500 medical studies to prove its effectiveness.
African red tea, more commonly known as Rooibos Tea has been shown to be extremely effective for weight loss.
• Rapid results
One main benefit of consuming this tea is that delivers rapid results. You may start noticing a change in your weight and health within two weeks of using this product.Isn’t that good!
• Enhances energy
It produces and maintains your energy levels throughout the day. This gives you the impetus to face the day ahead with the liveliness that it deserves
• It helps in reducing hunger
This detox tea is renowned as a hunger stopper. It acts swiftly to cut out all the cravings you might have for junk and fatty foods. Research has concluded that consuming just 17oz of liquids can provide fullness signals to the brain.
•You have to pay extra for the audio format.
That being said, you don’t really need to purchase the audio format as it provides no extra benefit.
The Red Tea Detox program comes with a lot of benefits and a few downsides (I will be posting more blogs in the future regarding the exact meal plan and exercise routine I followed during these detox periods). However, the pros clearly outweigh the cons.
Focusing primarily on weight loss alone, I was able to lose a whooping 12 pounds within the first month of maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regime, in addition to drinking the tea 2-3 a days.
2. Organifi Red Juice
I became curious about Organifi Red Juice after having tried their Green Juice, and loving it! Although it is called a “juice”, Organifi contains many of the same ingredients as red tea that aids in the process of weight loss and maintaining a healthy, youthful appearance.
The 11 Organifi Red Juice Ingredients:
- Reishi Mushroom
- Siberian Ginseng
Now being that I love my fellow health-mates and that I am dedicated to providing you 101 factual, healthy lifestyle & fitness tips (hence the naming of the blog), I have not only purchased this product in a attempt to write a review about it, but personally consumed this product for 30+ days. So here’s my personal review regarding Organifi Red Juice:
*Please note that in addition to drinking the tea twice a day (once in the morning and once before my last meal of the day), I also completed some form of cardio (ie., treadmill, elliptical, fitness bike), for 30-45 minutes every other day and consumed the recommended 1,600 caloric intake daily which was based on my height and weight*
This is important because your expectations need to be realistic.
If you are a couch potato eating fried potatoes and do as much exercise as a potato then don’t expect any miracles.
However if you live a relatively healthy lifestyle and looking for an extra boost then this product may be of great help, as it was to me. Despite the longer mixing time and slightly bitter taste, I was able to lose 6 pounds over the course of my 30 day regime.
You may or may not get the same results as I did but that of course, will all depend on you.
In fact, Organifi actually state on their website (albeit in microscopic sized font at the bottom of the page) that all of their acclaimed benefits are: “In combination with a healthful diet/exercise program”.
Possible Side Effects:
In general, drinking red tea is very safe. Although negative side effects are extremely rare, some have been reported.
One case study found that drinking large amounts of rooibos tea daily was linked to an increase in liver enzymes, which can often indicate a liver problem. However, this was only one complex case.
Certain compounds in the tea can stimulate the production of the female sex hormone, estrogen.
Some sources suggest that people with hormone-sensitive conditions, such as breast cancer, may want to avoid this type of tea.
However, this effect is very mild and it is likely that you would need to consume very large amounts before you would see an effect.
